Locating M1 Garand Ammo
Need help in locating a reasonably priced bulk (cans/cases) supplier for M1 Garand ammo other than CMP stores.
Thank you in advance. |
Re: Locating M1 Garand Ammo
IIRC, the M1 is chambered for .30-06 or .308. Any gun store should have it, and most of the usual suspects will have it in bulk for low(er) cost.
Try Wideners, Ammo to Go, and so on. EDIT: I forgot about this - http://www.ammoengine.com/find/ammo/.30-06_Springfield http://www.ammoengine.com/find/ammo/...ster_7.62x51mm (don't bother with "Cheaper Than Dirt" - the name doesn't apply to their prices, only their customer service and shipping policies) |
Re: Locating M1 Garand Ammo
The days of 30-06 surplus are gone. You have missed the end by 3 or 4 years. CMP no longer has any surplus available and neither does anybody else, at least not at a reasonable price.
You are probably already aware of the pressure concerns, but just in case, do not use ammo that is not loaded to match the military specs (150gr bullet @ 2700fps). Using modern ammo which operates at much higher pressure will damage the op rod. http://gun-deals.com/ammo.php?caliber=.30-06 This is a much better ammo search engine. It includes shipping costs which are very significant when ordering a case or more of ammo. The other one posted does not have the latest deals either. |

GB1980,
The only modern manufactured ammo that I am aware of that will not damage the 'ol Girl is a new loading produced by Hornady specifically for the M1. http://www.hornady.com/in-the-news/l...n-from-hornady Other than Hornady you may have to 'roll yer own'. |

The original M1 Garand was chambered for 30-06 or 7.62 X 65mm Some later were converted to (more or less) 308 Winchester or 7.62 X 51 MM There's lots of debate about the compatibility of "308" vs. "7.62 X 51" (NATO) but there is no debate about "308" vs. 30-06 even though the diameter of the bullet is the same. The two are not even close to interchangeable. |
Re: Locating M1 Garand Ammo
Do not buy ammo from the store!!!!
M1 ammo needs to have a fast burning powder. Slow burning powder in commercial hunting ammo will eventually ruin your Op-Rod. CMP will be getting new Greek HXP M1 garand ammo in a few months. Save up and buy that. Or you could by a Shuster(?) gas plug for it and use commercial ammo. |
Re: Locating M1 Garand Ammo
The M1 Garand was designed to fire the M1 ball ammo, which was a 172 grain bullet. Later on, the US developed the M2 ball (150 grain loaded with IMR 4895) because the M1 ball ammo was "too long range" for the National Guard firing ranges.
The M1 Garand should properly be loaded with powder that is in the general burning rate of IMR 4895 or IMR 4064. This is because you need the right pressure at the gas port (not as some have said because modern ammo is higher pressure) Modern ammo may or may not be loaded with powder that is slower than 4064. The big thing is that there is no way to know. Ammo loaded with slower powders can damage the op rod because the pressure is too high too late (the action itself is almost impervious, Gen Hatcher tested one by loading a cartridge to the top with blank powder!!!) Federal's American Eagle line (150 grain FMJ) has generally been considered safe, (but that's not a guarantee), and Hornady has a new line (probably expensive) designed specifically for the M1. My advice is to load your favorite 150 grain bullet with 47.5 grains of IMR 4895 in Lake City cases, or your favorite 165-168 grain bullet with 46.0 grains of IMR 4064. Go up a half grain if using commercial cases, and you can use H 4895 instead of IMR if you go down about a 1/2 grain. These loads will match the original M2 ball loading and the standard match loading for the M1. (insert standard disclaimer about work your loads up yadda yadda) |
Re: Locating M1 Garand Ammo
Umm, CMP has a bunch of HXP (Greek) inbound, it sounds like it'll hit the shelves in Jan/Feb.
If you can't wait that long, check gunbroker, arfcom, et al, for guys unloading what they got from CMP's last batch. |
